Tar Surfacing in Springs

Yards, hardstands and driveways in Springs. A lot of the surfaces out here have taken heavy traffic for decades — and milling the old one is often half the answer.

  • Old industrial surfaces milled and reused where it makes sense
  • Free site visit and a written spec and price
  • Saturday morning visits, 08:00–13:00

No phone quotes. Somebody comes out and measures.

In Springs

Out here, the old surface is usually worth something

Springs has industrial ground that has been worked for a very long time, and the yards show it. Casseldale, Geduld and the belt along the R29 are full of hardstands laid decades ago, patched a dozen times, and now more pothole than surface.

The instinct is to cart it all away and start again. Often that is the expensive answer. Broken asphalt can be milled on site and used in the sub-base, which saves both the disposal and a good part of the new stone. Whether yours is worth milling depends on what is in it and how deep it goes, and that is one of the first things we check when we come out. The domestic side — Selcourt, Struisbult, Springs Extension — is ordinary driveway work, and we do it on the same runs.

What we get called about

More pothole than surface? Patched a dozen times and still going?

  • It sank where the car stands.

The base was never compacted properly, so the weight found the soft ground under it.

  • The tar cracked in a pattern.

That is the ground moving underneath, not the tar wearing out.

  • Water sits on it after a storm.

No falls were set, so the water stays, soaks in, and the base gives up from below.

  • The old surface is breaking up at the entrance.

The entrance takes every vehicle that comes to the property, and it is usually built the same as the rest — which is not enough.

Once a whole area is failing, patching is money spent on the same problem.

How we build it

In Springs, the base gets built before anything is laid

A surface is only as good as what is under it. In Springs that is worth saying out loud, because it is the part every cheap quote leaves out and the part you cannot inspect once the job is done.

  1. 01

    Strip and shape

Off comes the topsoil, and we cut the falls so water leaves the surface.

  2. 02

    Sub-base

G5 crushed stone, compacted in layers, deep enough for what drives on it.

  3. 03

    Prime coat

MC-30 bitumen, so the asphalt bonds instead of sitting loose on the stone.

  4. 04

    Asphalt

6 mm or 9 mm on driveways, 13 mm where trucks run. Hot, screeded, rolled.

  5. 05

    Edges and clean-up

Straight edges or kerbing, then swept and blown before we leave.

Why Choose Us

Why Springs property owners take our quote

  • We mill and reuse where it makes sense

Carting a failed surface away and buying all-new stone is the expensive answer. Often the old asphalt belongs in your new base.

  • We build the base, and we show it to you

Sub-base, compaction, prime coat, then tar. It is itemised on your quote as its own line, so you can hold it against a quote that has not got one.

  • A price before we start

Written, per square metre, off an actual measure-up. No telephone quotes. No number that grows halfway through.

  • We are in Joburg every day

East Rand base, metro service area. Not a national call centre that sends whoever is free.

  • The crew that quotes is the crew that arrives

We do not subcontract the lay. James quotes every job himself.

What it costs

What a Springs job usually turns on

Priced per square metre, measured on site. These are the three things that move it most here.

  • Whether the old surface can be milled

Reusing it in the base saves the disposal and a good part of the new material. We check this first.

  • How badly the ground has been worked

Decades of heavy traffic on a thin base means more depth to rebuild. It is what it is, and it goes on the quote.

  • Area and access

Large yards price better per square metre; getting plant onto an operating site does not.

Free site visit. Written quote. No obligation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you come out to Springs?

Yes, regularly. Springs, Brakpan and Benoni are one run for us, so we are on the far East Rand most weeks. Phone 064 856 3715 and tell us the address.

Is there a tar surfacing company near me in Springs?

We are an East Rand crew and Springs is inside our normal working area. There is no premises to visit — we come to the site, measure it, and quote in writing.

What happens if it rains on the day?

We move you. Nothing gets laid in the rain, ever. In summer we start before sunrise so the surface is down and rolled before the afternoon storms come over. We would rather move you to Thursday than come back in two years.

Can you not just tar over what is there?

Sometimes. If the base underneath is still sound we can mill the old surface off and lay a new one. Often the answer is no, because the old surface broke up precisely because the base failed. We will tell you which one you have when we look at it.

Our yard is more pothole than surface. Is it worth patching?

Usually not. Once a surface is failing across the whole area, patching is money spent repeatedly on the same problem. What is often worth doing is milling the old surface and reusing it in the new base, which brings the rebuild price down considerably.

Do I need to be there when you quote?

It helps. We would rather walk it with you, so you can point out what bothers you and we can show you where the water is going. That is why we offer Saturday morning visits between 08:00 and 13:00.

What does milling actually mean?

A machine grinds the old asphalt off and breaks it up. Depending on what is in it, that material can go straight back into the sub-base instead of being carted away. It saves the disposal cost and a good part of the new stone.

Is tar cheaper than paving?

Usually yes, per square metre, and it goes down a lot faster. Paving wins on looks and on lifting one section to repair it. We do not do brick paving, so we have no reason to push you either way.
