In Midrand
On a big flat area, water is the first problem
Midrand work is mostly large and mostly flat — business park parking around Waterfall and Halfway House, estate roads out toward Kyalami, hardstands off the N1. Large flat areas collect a remarkable amount of water in a Highveld storm, and if it has nowhere to go it sits, soaks in and takes the base apart from underneath.
So on a job this size the falls and the drainage get designed before anything else. Where does the water leave the area, how does it get there, and what happens to it at the boundary. Then the load: a visitor parking bay and a service road behind the same building are two different builds, and a single specification across the whole site is either overpriced in one half or under-built in the other. We split it and show both on the quote.
What we get called about
Water standing across the parking bays? Service road rutted, bays fine?
-
It sank where the car stands.
The base was never compacted properly, so the weight found the soft ground under it.
-
The tar cracked in a pattern.
That is the ground moving underneath, not the tar wearing out.
-
Water sits on it after a storm.
No falls were set, so the water stays, soaks in, and the base gives up from below.
-
The old surface is breaking up at the entrance.
The entrance takes every vehicle that comes to the property, and it is usually built the same as the rest — which is not enough.
One specification across a whole site is wrong in half of it.
How we build it
In Midrand, the base gets built before anything is laid
A surface is only as good as what is under it. In Midrand that is worth saying out loud, because it is the part every cheap quote leaves out and the part you cannot inspect once the job is done.
- 01
Strip and shape
Off comes the topsoil, and we cut the falls so water leaves the surface.
- 02
Sub-base
G5 crushed stone, compacted in layers, deep enough for what drives on it.
- 03
Prime coat
MC-30 bitumen, so the asphalt bonds instead of sitting loose on the stone.
- 04
Asphalt
6 mm or 9 mm on driveways, 13 mm where trucks run. Hot, screeded, rolled.
- 05
Edges and clean-up
Straight edges or kerbing, then swept and blown before we leave.

We also do asphalt milling, slurry seal, cape seal, tar rejuvenation and sealing, crack sealing, kerbing and road marking. Pothole patching we do as part of a larger job. Ask us when we come out.
Why Choose Us
Why Midrand property owners take our quote
-
We design the falls before the surface
On a large flat area, drainage is the whole job. Get it wrong and the best asphalt in Gauteng will still fail from underneath.
-
We build the base, and we show it to you
Sub-base, compaction, prime coat, then tar. It is itemised on your quote as its own line, so you can hold it against a quote that has not got one.
-
A price before we start
Written, per square metre, off an actual measure-up. No telephone quotes. No number that grows halfway through.
-
We are in Joburg every day
East Rand base, metro service area. Not a national call centre that sends whoever is free.
-
The crew that quotes is the crew that arrives
We do not subcontract the lay. James quotes every job himself.
What it costs
What a Midrand job usually turns on
Priced per square metre, measured on site. These are the three things that move it most here.
-
Where the water goes
Falls, channels and the outlet at the boundary. On a big area this is the first cost, not an afterthought.
-
Split specification
Visitor bays and service routes get different builds. One spec across the whole site over-pays for half of it.
-
Phasing
Keeping a business park or an estate operating means laying in sections, and that takes more days.
Free site visit. Written quote. No obligation.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you come out to Midrand?
Yes. It is a run north from our East Rand base, and it is well worth it for business park and estate work. We usually pair a Midrand job with something in Sandton in the same week.
Is there a tar surfacing company near me in Midrand?
There are contractors based nearer. What we do differently is specify and itemise the sub-base, and split the specification between parking bays and service routes rather than pricing the whole site the same. Phone 064 856 3715 and we will come and look.
How much does it cost to tar a driveway in Midrand?
It is priced per square metre, and the number depends on the area, what is under the ground now and how deep the base has to go. We do not quote over the phone, because that would be a guess. The site visit and the written quote are both free.
How long does a driveway take?
Most domestic driveways run one to three days, weather permitting. A yard or a parking area depends on the size and how much base work it needs. The number of working days goes on the quote.
How do you handle drainage on a big parking area?
It is designed first. We set the falls so the water leaves the area, plan how it gets to an outlet, and price the channels or kerbing as their own line. On a large flat area this decides whether the surface lasts, so it is not something to leave until the end.
Do I need to be there when you quote?
It helps. We would rather walk it with you, so you can point out what bothers you and we can show you where the water is going. That is why we offer Saturday morning visits between 08:00 and 13:00.
Can you resurface a business park in phases?
Yes, and that is normal here. We agree the sequence with the managing agent first, keep access to every building at all times, and lay section by section. It takes more days than a clear site and the quote states how many.
Is tar cheaper than paving?
Usually yes, per square metre, and it goes down a lot faster. Paving wins on looks and on lifting one section to repair it. We do not do brick paving, so we have no reason to push you either way.
