What we get called about
Old tar gone grey and thin? Water running down into the garage?
-
It sank where the car stands.
The base was never compacted properly, so the weight found the soft ground under it.
-
The tar cracked in a pattern.
That is the ground moving underneath, not the tar wearing out.
-
Water sits on it after a storm.
No falls were set, so the water stays, soaks in, and the base gives up from below.
-
The old surface is breaking up at the entrance.
The entrance takes every vehicle that comes to the property, and it is usually built the same as the rest — which is not enough.
Most of it starts with the ground and the falls, not with the tar.
How we build it
In Alberton, the base gets built before anything is laid
A surface is only as good as what is under it. In Alberton that is worth saying out loud, because it is the part every cheap quote leaves out and the part you cannot inspect once the job is done.
- 01
Strip and shape
Off comes the topsoil, and we cut the falls so water leaves the surface.
- 02
Sub-base
G5 crushed stone, compacted in layers, deep enough for what drives on it.
- 03
Prime coat
MC-30 bitumen, so the asphalt bonds instead of sitting loose on the stone.
- 04
Asphalt
6 mm or 9 mm on driveways, 13 mm where trucks run. Hot, screeded, rolled.
- 05
Edges and clean-up
Straight edges or kerbing, then swept and blown before we leave.
In Alberton
Close enough to come out at short notice
Alberton is a short run for us, and it changes what we can offer. If you phone on a Tuesday, we can usually be standing on your driveway by Thursday, and if the weather turns and we have to move a lay day, moving it costs us almost nothing — which means we move it rather than gamble your surface.
The work here is mostly domestic. New Redruth, Randhart, Meyersdal and Brackenhurst — driveways on established stands, often with a slope off the street and older tar that has gone thin and grey. Meyersdal in particular has a lot of long, steep approaches, and on those the falls and the drainage decide the job before the tar does.

Why Choose Us
Why Alberton property owners take our quote
-
Ten minutes from the yard
Short-notice site visits are genuinely easy in Alberton, and a lay day that has to move costs us little enough that we move it rather than risk your surface.
-
We build the base, and we show it to you
Sub-base, compaction, prime coat, then tar. It is itemised on your quote as its own line, so you can hold it against a quote that has not got one.
-
A price before we start
Written, per square metre, off an actual measure-up. No telephone quotes. No number that grows halfway through.
-
We are in Joburg every day
East Rand base, metro service area. Not a national call centre that sends whoever is free.
-
The crew that quotes is the crew that arrives
We do not subcontract the lay. James quotes every job himself.

We also do asphalt milling, slurry seal, cape seal, tar rejuvenation and sealing, crack sealing, kerbing and road marking. Pothole patching we do as part of a larger job. Ask us when we come out.
What it costs
What a Alberton job usually turns on
Priced per square metre, measured on site. These are the three things that move it most here.
-
Slope off the street
A steep approach needs a coarser mix and more care rolling it, and the water has to be given a route.
-
What is left of the old tar
A thin grey skin over sound ground can sometimes be milled and resurfaced. Cracking in a pattern cannot.
-
Area, measured on site
Long driveways on established stands are usually bigger than people estimate. We measure rather than guess.
Free site visit. Written quote. No obligation.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a tar surfacing company near me in Alberton?
Yes. We are based on the East Rand, minutes away, so Alberton is close work for us. No office to visit — phone 064 856 3715 and we come to the job.
How quickly can you come out in Alberton?
Usually within a couple of days, and often sooner. Saturday mornings between 08:00 and 13:00 are available too, which is normally the easiest time to walk the driveway together.
How much does it cost to tar a driveway in Alberton?
It is priced per square metre, and the number depends on the area, what is under the ground now and how deep the base has to go. We do not quote over the phone, because that would be a guess. The site visit and the written quote are both free.
Can you not just tar over what is there?
Sometimes. If the base underneath is still sound we can mill the old surface off and lay a new one. Often the answer is no, because the old surface broke up precisely because the base failed. We will tell you which one you have when we look at it.
My driveway in Meyersdal is steep. Can it be tarred?
Yes. We use a coarser mix on a steep approach so it grips, and we take more care with the rolling. The bigger job on a steep driveway is usually the drainage — water runs faster and does more damage, so it needs somewhere to go.
How long does a tarred surface last?
Fifteen to twenty years if the base under it is right. Laid straight onto soft ground, you will see cracking and sinking inside two or three summers. That is the whole difference, and it is the part you cannot see once the job is done.
The old tar has gone grey and thin. Is that a base problem?
Not necessarily. A surface that is structurally sound but dried out can often be sealed or resurfaced, which costs a fraction of starting again. If it is cracking in a pattern, that is the base and sealing it would be money wasted. We will tell you which you have.
Is tar cheaper than paving?
Usually yes, per square metre, and it goes down a lot faster. Paving wins on looks and on lifting one section to repair it. We do not do brick paving, so we have no reason to push you either way.
